The Piper Saratoga reportedly crashed into a pickup truck and then struck a trailer in the Birchfield trailer park along U.S. 33 just south of the Wal-Mart in New Tazewell between 10 and 10:30 p.m.
Neither of the people in the trailer was hurt. The pilot of the plane was taken by Lifestar to UT Medical Center.
Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration will be in look into the crash. Residents from the three mobile homes around the crash site won't be allowed back into their homes until after the FAA investigators complete their investigation.
According to reports, the Louisville airport contacted Glenna Brown of the Middlesboro Airport board Sunday night inquiring about airports in the Tri-State area equipped with full landing lights.
While the Middlesboro Airport is without such lights airports in Tazwell and nearby in Virginia are both fully quipped.
The pilot was apparently trying to reach the airport in Tazwell before the crash.
One of the people in the trailer told WATE-TV that he heard the plane sputtering and felt the whole trailer shake when the plane hit.
"The people had called 911 and indicated there was a plane circling the area," said Assistant Fire Chief Richard Janwey. "This apparently was his second attempt or pass in this particular area."
The plane is registered to Pease Consulting Company in Cincinnati, Ohio.
