A Pineville man was critically injured Monday in an early morning ATV accident.

Bell County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Cooper said Jerry Wayne Patterson, 38, was driving along Peach Blosum Road when he lost control of the vehicle and rolled down a bank. The ATV then hit a tree.

Patterson suffered severe leg and head injuries. He was transported by Bell County EMS to Rightfork Elementary School where he was flown to U.T. Medical Center.

Cooper said Patterson was in critical condition when he was evacuated, but was later described as in "guarded" condition.

Patterson was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Not wearing a helmet is a common factor in nearly all ATV accidents with injury.

"I don't think I've worked one yet where they were wearing a helmet," said Cooper was the investigating officer, he was assisted at the scene by Bell County Sheriff Bruce Bennett.
