The single-engine plane crashed-landed into a pick-up truck and mobile home just after 10 p.m. Sunday.
FAA investigators said the plane was low on fuel and they are not sure if engine trouble played a factor in the crash.
The pilot and owner, 46-year-old David Pease III, of Ohio, remains hospitalized at UT Medical Center. He had dropped off his kids at a summer camp in North Carolina and was headed home to Ohio when he crashed.
The Louisville airport contacted Glenna Brown of the Middlesboro Airport board Sunday night inquiring about airports in the Tri-State area equipped with full landing lights.
While the Middlesboro Airport is without such lights, airports in Tazewell and nearby in Virginia are both fully quipped.
The pilot was apparently trying to reach the airport in Tazewell. The crash happened about two miles from the airport.
Inspectors want to talk to the pilot. They've spoken with his family, learning that he's a very experienced pilot. He may have been unfamiliar with the area, the airport and especially landing there at night.
Three people were inside the trailer at the time but no one was hurt. They were in the next room.
