A large box of unscented baby wipes can be a heaven sent when you've not bathed in a couple weeks.

Baby wipes, lotion, tooth paste, Chapstick and dark colored socks are all items that could help Delta Company soldiers live a little easier in the sandy blast-furnace that is the Middle East.

Their families have answered the call and hopes the community will help.

"We're collecting personal items to send to the men. They're personal items that the government doesn't supply," said Debbie Sutton, who is a member of the Family Readiness Group of the Delta Company of the 1st Battalion, 149th Infantry.

Sutton and several members of the readiness group braved the rainy weather to distribute large plastic pales to businesses and churches around Middlesboro.

Assembling at Food City on Thursday afternoon, several members of the readiness group, along with Food City manager, Richard Smith erected a display near the doors.

Each tub is marked with a large poster-board and includes a list of items the members of Delta Company requested.

Hazel Abbott, who's husband, 1st Sgt. Jake Abbott, is the top enlisted man in Delta Company, said her husband told her the men were in good spirits and getting a lot of fluid while in Kuwait. Temperatures were topping out at 120-degrees in that small Arab country just south of Iraq. They also live in air conditioned tents.

Life will get harder in Iraq.

When a soldier has been in the field for weeks without a chance to bathe, often a box of baby wipes can be heaven-sent.

While the readiness group is relying on the community for donations, Abbott said the family organization would most likely have to front the costs of sending the items overseas.

Those wishing to make a donation to the family readiness group may call Abbott at 248-7963 or mail donations to Route 3, Box A 497, Middlesboro, Ky 40965.
