Additional details about last week's plane crash in Chenoa have been released by the Bell County Sheriff's Department.

According to Sheriff Bruce Bennett, the pilot's name was William Lesene, 70, of Pineville, S.C.

“What happened is that he lived in Pineville, S.C. He went up to Henry County to visit a friend who has a private airport up there,” said Bennett.

In the days following the crash, Federal Aviation Administration officials have investigated the crash, but have released few details, said Bennett.

One detail that was reported wrongly in previous stories was the make of the aircraft.

Bennett said the plane was actually as 1966 Cessna 150F and was certified as air worthy on Sept. 14.

Bennett said, based on conversations with the pilot's friend in Henry County, “At the time of the crash it was 3:30 to 4 p.m.” With the accident occurring during the day, fog and weather has been ruled out as a crash contributor.

Additional details have also been released regarding the pilot's history.

According to Bennett, the 70-year old pilot was a retired airliner/transport pilot who had been certified on 727s, DC-10s and a host of other major aircraft.

In addition to the FAA, the engine manufacturer, the plane manufacturer and an insurance company have also visited the crash site.

Bennett said the insurance company was making plans to possibly remove the crash debris using a large helicopter.
