CUMBERLAND GAP NATIONAL PARK - It's been feeling more like early spring rather than late fall in the tri-state area for the past week with record warm temperatures. But those same warm days have made for the perfect time to view the fall colors.

Sunday provided beautiful sunshine for the Cumberland Gap National Park as hundreds of visitors stoped by the area to view the wonderful fall colors.

Linda and Mike Harp from southern Alabama were on their way back home from Lexington when they decided to make a stop on the Pinnacle overlook. This was their first time visiting and they were very mystified by the landscape’s color and beauty.

“It's simply gorgeous,” said Mike, who had his camera in tow, peering over the rail to view the houses and hills below.

His wife Linda also bragged on the area's beauty but from a distance away from the rail. She laughed as she explained she was a little fearful of heights.

“I'm surprised I'm up here,”she said. “But it sure is beautiful and we'd love to come back again.”

Mike commented on the area's landmarks, as well as the Cumberland Gap Tunnel. Talking about the tunnel's length, he said it brought back some older memories of the Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile, Ala.

“You stayed in it (Bankhead) for a long time. They had men posted, all through the old tunnel back when I was a child and if you got too fast, they'd blow a whistle,” he said. “My dad was known to drive fast at times.”

Like the Harps, many will still be flocking to the park within the coming week. The fall colors are currently near their peak for the season as winter is just around the corner.
