Veterans and families assembled at the Rome Cardwell Park in Tazewell on Saturday, Nov. 5th to honor past and present members of the Armed Forces. Claiborne County Veterans Service Officer Scott Marlow led the ceremony. Flag bearers from V.F.W Post 8779, D.A.V. Chapter 35 and American Legion Post 109 presented the colors. Music was provided by the Cumberland Gap High School Band and Janice Derryberry.

Retired Army Major W. Lee Brame related his reflections about what we are doing in Iraq. He told of people he met in Europe who had fond recollections of actions of American troops of earlier times. Seeds of friendship had been sown which grew and flourished in later years. Brame summed up by saying "We are doing the best we can" in Iraq and around the world.

Circuit Court Judge John McAfee spoke about our troops of the 278th Regiment who are returning home to Claiborne County. The Guardsmen are coming back a few at a time and local citizens may not have to opportunity to hold a major welcome home party. Judge AcAfee emphasized that we should all take time to welcome the returning personnel and to thank them for their service.

State Sen. Mike Williams addressed the Cumberland Gap Band, telling them that the freedom of choice they enjoy is possible only because of the sacrifice of military veterans.

Services concluded with a 21 gun salute and the sounding of "Taps" by the Claiborne County Honor Guard.
