PINEVILLE - A Middlesboro man has been sentenced to 35 years behind bars for the murder of his son.
Sterling Raney Jr., 61, was found guilty by a jury last month for the May 28th shooting death of his son, Danny L. Raney.
Raney, 37, of Harland, Ind., suffered a gunshot wound to the chest that Saturday afternoon when Middlesboro Police arrived on the scene at the elder Raney's home.
Raney was transported to the Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital where he later died. According to police records, a preliminary investigation revealed that Raney was shot by his father during a domestic dispute with a 12 gauge shotgun.
Jerry Wayne Houston, 44, of Middlesboro, was sentenced to serve six years in prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree trafficking in a controlled substance (oxycodone), first offense.
Danny Bullock, 23, of Middlesboro, was sentenced to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of second degree trafficking in a controlled substance (codeine), first offense.
Robert Allen Shumate, Jr., 33, of Middlesboro, was sentenced to serve three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to five counts of receiving stolen property.
Shumate's case stems from May of this year in which he pawned and sale several items, including a trimmer and a 2-wheeled air compressor, which had been stolen from Middlesboro Police chief Jeff Sharpe.
Other items included were a mower that had been stolen from Praise Assembly Church, a Milwaukee Sawzall that had been stolen from Duraline, a window air conditioning unit that had been stolen from Michael Redmond, and a pressure washer that had been stolen from Don Bryant.
Lee Roy Barnett, 35, of Middlesboro, was sentenced to serve two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence (first offense), reckless driving, license to be in possession, fleeing or evading the police in the first degree, passing a loading/unloading school bus (first offense), improper passing, failure to signal, permitting an unlicensed operator to operate a motor vehicle, and possession of an alcohol beverage container in a motor vehicle.
Donnie L. Wyatt, 32, of Middlesboro, was sentenced to serve two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the charge of theft of a controlled substance, first offense.
However, Wyatt's sentenced was reduced to serve only 30 days in the Bell County jail and three years of unsupervised probation (with terms and conditions) for an incident that occurred back in May when he took hydrocodone from the Kroger Pharmacy in Middlesboro. He was ordered to pay $77.98 in restitution.
