BARBOURVILLE - A strong performance by senior center Melodye Smith and 34 trips to the free throw line weren't enough for the Pineville Lady Lions to overcome the depth of Knox Central on Saturday.

The Lady Panthers had ten players to each score at least three points as they held on for a 60-52 win to wrap up district play with a 6-0 record.

Sophomore guard Kayla Wilburn put up six of her 11 points in the first quarter, but Smith had six of her own and senior guard Chasity Fuston added 3 plus a free throws Pineville hung tough. Freshman Brittany Jordan and junior guard Wendi Messer added baskets as Knox Central led it 14-13 after one.

The Lady Panthers seemed to have one mission in the second quarter: Find Ashley Madon and punish her.

The junior guard hit a 3 to open the period, then was sent to the free throw line an amazing 12 times before halftime. She hit four of them to account for all seven of the Lady Lions' points in the quarter.

Meanwhile, Knox Central got 3-pointers of their own from Bridgette Moore, Sarah Mills and Medina Jackson to open up a 27-20 lead at the half.

Smith had eight points for Pineville in the third quarter, but Wilburn hit a 3 for Knox Central and Messer added two baskets and the Lady Panthers led it 40-34 heading into the fourth.

Messer took over, scoring seven of her team-leading 13 points in the quarter.

Fuston hit a pair of 3s and added two free throws and Smith hit five of six free throws in the quarter to lead all scorers with 19 points. Two free throws from Madon and a basket by Leslie Howard helped to keep Pineville within striking distance, but Ashley Sizemore hit five of eight free throws down the stretch as Knox Central held on for the win.

Madon finished up 9-of-18 from the charity stripe and totaled 12 points for the Lady Lions. Overall, Pineville hit a 22 of 34 free throws in the game.

The Lady Lions came in having won three of their last four games, but the loss drops them to 8-15 on the season and they complete district play at 2-4.

Pineville returns to action on Thursday when they visit Williamsburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
