At last year's Relay for Life, which was the first ever for Lee County, 20 teams participated raising $39,000 to fight cancer. Teams sponsor various money raising events and activities prior to the Relay, then take turns at the event itself walking or running around the track so that at least one person from each team is on the track during the entire overnight event. Teams set up campsites and other makeshift accommodations at the Relay site, forming a community celebration of life. Entertainment is provided by local groups. Some teams serve a variety of foods, or offer fun-filled games for a donation, as on-site fund raisers.
The purpose of the Relay for Life, which is the American Cancer Society's National Signature Activity, is to seek funds to help fight cancer and to bring about greater awareness of the disease. Relays were held in more than 3000 communities nationwide last year raising more than $212 million and drawing 2 million participants.
All teams who participated in Lee County's first Relay for Life in July 2005 are welcome and ecouraged to particiapte in the 2006 Relay, and the Lee County Chapter also encourages the formation and participation of new teams so this year's Relay will be even bigger and better. Teams can be made up of friends and family, or they can represent businesses, schools and/or places of worship.
Last year Lee County won the “Rookie Relay of the Year Award” from the American Cancer Society South Atlantic Division which includes seven states and Washington, D.C.
Don't miss the opportunity to become a part of this wonderful, community spirit filled event.
