If you haven't visited the hospital laboratory in the last 10 years, you might not recognize it. The department has just about tripled in size and the employees are so proud of all the improvements and advances in technology.
The first thing you'll notice when you come to the Lab is a warm and friendly Out-patient Lobby especially for lab patients. The next thing you'll find is a smiling face to greet you and take care of you. What you might not notice is the impressive array of state-of-the-art instrumentation used to perform most of the laboratory tests. The Laboratory has a computerized system for ordering and resulting tests, which includes barcoded samples, interfaced instruments, automatic printing of results for in-patients and auto-faxing of reports to the physician for out-patients.
Expanding medical knowledge and technological developments have increased the need for medical laboratory testing. More than 10 billion lab tests are performed in the US each year and lab results influence an estimated 70 percent of medical decisions (2006 American Society of Clinical Pathology).
Claiborne County Hospital Laboratory processes an average of 500 tests per day, with 94 percent of those performed in their hospital lab. That means results are available the same day for faster treatment and care. The lab is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is staffed by a team of licensed professionals.
Laboratory Manager Brandi Callebs, says that accurate results and great customer service are their top priorities. The laboratory staff have lots of food and fun activities planned in celebration this week. National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is a chance for laboratory personnel to celebrate their professionalism and be recognized for their efforts.
