He was the son of the late Fred Leon Smith and Martha Bell Brooks Smith. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Harrogate. He was a Veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army, where he was awarded the WWII Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and A.P. Theater Ribbon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister: Bobbie Smith Coward; two brothers: Ernest E. Smith and Charles Henry Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years: Jeanette Goin Smith; nephews and spouses: John Leslie and Charlotte Coward of Harrogate, William E. and Margie Smith of Piqua, Oh; great nephew and wife: John Clinton and Sandra Coward of Speedwell; great nephews: Ryan Christopher and Adam E. Smith. of Piqua, Oh; great great nephew: Jonathan Coward of Speedwell; sister-in-law: Banna I. Smith of Troy, Oh; and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends.
The family received friends from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, May 20 at Coffey Funeral Home in Harrogate. Funeral services were Sunday, May 21 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Harrogate with Rev. James R. Ely and Dr. Malcolm Hester officiating. Organist: Barbara Ely. Songs by Carolyn Williams and Wanda Evans. Burial in the Harrogate Cemetery with Military Honors.
