Clyde was a life-long resident of Claiborne County where he was an avid farmer and businessman. One of his primary vocations was education as he served not only as a school bus driver, teacher, and principal, but was also the youngest Superintendent of Schools being appointed at the age of 34. He continued to serve his community as a county commissioner and in numerous other capacities. Clyde was a well-known businessman and entrepreneur of numerous projects and co-owner of Claiborne Textiles. He was a life long member of the Republican Party.
He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Peoples Bank of Ewing, Va and served on the board of the Claiborne County Water Department, and the Claiborne County Hospital. Clyde was a member of Masonic Lodge #546 and Kerbella Shriner's Temple. As a member of Shawanee Baptist Church for over 50 years, he served as a Deacon, Music Director and Chairman of the finance and building committee. His love for his family, church and community was evident throughout his entire life. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years: Nannie Mae Thompson Nevils; parents: Walter Patterson and Media Viola Nevils and younger sisters: Gerrlene and Merrlene.
He is survived by his daughters: Brenda Gayle Nevils Carithers of Norcross, Ga. and son-in-law Bruce Carithers, Sherrie Hope Nevils Claiborne of Harrogate and special friend Mark Bartley; son: Dr. James Richard (Dick) Nevils of Harrogate and daughter-in-law Sandy Nevils; five grandchildren: James Richard Patterson Carithers, Laura Ashley Carithers Black, Kristen Leigh Claiborne Tompkins, Andrea Nichole Nevils Wieck, Emily Brooke Nevils; great grandchildren: Samuel Austin Black, Paul Lawrence (Trey) Wieck III; and expectant great grandchildren of Kristen and Destin Tompkins and Andrea and Paul Wieck; sister: Pauline and brother-in-law Harry L. Chadwell.
Lovingly, he and Nannie Mae helped raise Jimmie and Douglas Thompson, their special nephews. In addition he leaves devote caregivers: Eileen Fultz, Leslie Daniels, Lorraine Smith and Pauline Ferguson and the Staff of Tri-State Rehabilitation Center as well as a host of other relatives, friends and church family.
Funeral services were Friday, May 26 at 8 p.m. with Rev. John Gibbons officiating. Songs by Shawanee Baptist Church Choir. Following the funeral services, a Masonic service was held. Graveside services were Saturday, May 27 at 11 a.m. at the Oak Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Shawanee Baptist Church Building Fund, of which his life was such a vital part.
