On October 28, 2005, Kentucky State Police and the Knox County Sheriff's Department answered a call where it was reported to the Knox County 911 Center that a person had shot himself. The person making the call to 911 was identified as Ginger Smith, the wife of the victim, Joe M. Smith of Wildcat Trail in Corbin.
Kentucky State Police Detective C.R. Wells conducted a nine-month-long investigation into the death of Joe Smith, 37.
On Monday, state police arrested Ginger Smith, 33, and charged her with the shooting death of her husband. Smith was arrested at her home without incident and lodged in the Knox County Jail and placed on a $100,000 bond. At this time no court date has been set.
In a separate incident Detective Wells started a joint investigation with the Department of Social Services into a complaint of sexual abuse by James Gambrel, 41, of Woodbine.
Police say the complaint against Gambrel was for alleged sexual abuse of his biological daughter during 2004. She was eight at the time of the alleged abuse.
Gambrel was indicted Friday and charged with two counts of first degree rape and two counts of incest.
Gambrel was lodged in the Knox County Jail and placed on a $50,000 cash bond. No trial date has been set.
