Each Goody's store will have snacks, lollipops, and face painting. Individual locations have arranged their own exciting lineup of children's activities, such as coloring, games, contests, and demonstrations.
Also on hand for the event will be officers from the Middlesboro Police Department's Cops For Kids Program. This is a program established through the MPD to help teach children that police officers aren't the bad guys. The program is best known for its annual Christmas party for low-income children.
“This (Cops for Kids) helps show the kids that we're not the bad guys, that we're always there to help them, not to hurt them,” said Officer Petie Gilbert with the Middlesboro Police Department and coordinator of the program.
This will be the second year that the MPD Cops for Kids officers have taken part in the back to school bash at Goody's. As they did last year, the Middlesboro Police Officers will provide free fingerprinting for child identification. There will also be bake sales, drawings and other fun activities for children every half hour, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Several giveaways are plannned for the day. The first 100 kids at Goody's will receive a free baseball cap. The first 50 kids will get a free blank t-shirt that they may decorate at a coloring station in the store.
Every shopper will receive a scratch-off savings card with a secret discount, and for $5 (with $50 purchase) kids can get a full-size backpack.
To help raise money for their annual Christmas program, the MPD Cops for Kids will also hold a car wash on Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost will be a $5 donation per vehicle.
