CUMBERLAND GAP, Tenn. - Along with the normal meeting agenda, on the hands of the Cumberland Gap Board of Mayor and Alderman (BMA) was a sensitive issue - preserving the historic aspect of the town. The owner of the Old Siler House, Tammy De Brot, brought to the BMA's attention that a lot next to the home is for sale and she is terrified of what may be built there. De Brot stressed that Cumberland Gap quickly ‘got into her blood’' and she cares about the scenery of the town. She suggested that the town form a Historic Planning Commission to manage the architectural planning of structures. Alderman Bill McGaffee informed De Brot that the issue will be on the next meeting's agenda.

In other business, Town Recorder Linda Moyers stated that the town will be able to pay their bills without using money from the general funds account, something they have had to do in the past.

The BMA also discussed the $15,000 debt they have with Town Engineer Gary McGill. McGill has yet to receive any compensation from the town for this engineering services on the walking trail project. McGill was told that the town will stand by the agreement made with him at the last meeting stating that they will pay him three increments of $5,000. He stressed that he is in no rush to receive the money.

McGill reported that the state has granted the approval to build a new Water Treatment Plant, tabbing at $250,000. He added that the contract will be available for bidding in the near future. McGill went on to say that the Environmental Protection Agency requests that the town hold off on the project because of the administrative work due to Hurricane Katrina last year. Mayor John Douglas and McGill composed a letter to the EPA stating that the funding is needed immediately. They expect to receive a response in the near future.

The board concluded their meeting with the approval of Resolution 2-2006 to round (up or down) property taxes to the nearest even dollar. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 5 at 7 p.m. because the normal meeting date falls on Labor Day.
