Sophomore Spencer Greer ran the ball seven times for 55 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns for the Bobcats.
Junior quarterback Kyle Nelson was 9-for-12 passing for 138 yards and a touchdown. He also ran three times for seven yards and a score.
“It was a scrimmage and there we alot of mistakes,” said coach Dudley Hilton. “We've got alot of first year players and it showed.”
Bell opened the game by moving methodically down the field. Five pass plays and five runs set them with a first and goal at the two yard line.
Nelson picked up a fumbled snap and crashed through the line to score.
“We ran it about 50/50 and got several different receivers involved,” Hilton said. “I'm still trying to find a rhythm as far as making the right calls on pass plays.”
After the teams traded possessions, Williamsburg quarterback Thomas Frazier completed three straight passes to get the Jackets across mid field. After an incompletion and a run for no yardage, Frazier hit Chase Hamlin with a 45-yard bomb to tie the score.
But that was the last bright spot for the Yellow Jackets.
Bell came right back as Nelson threw deep to Shawnta Zachery Bell's first play. Zachery made one defender miss and outran everyone else to the end zone. The 76-yard score gave Bell a 14-7 lead.
Greer added his first touchdown, from three yards out, to make it 21-7 just before the half.
Justin Dozier intercepted Frazier's last ditch attempt to score.
“Our defensive backs did a good job against a good, experienced quarterback,” Hilton said. “We had one blown coverage and they got one touchdown.”
Greer broke free for a his 32-yard score to make it 28-7 on Bell's first possession of the second half.
After Bell got the ball back, freshman Josh Knuckles burst though the line and rumbled 60 yards, down to the five yard line.
Two plays later Tyler Harbin plunged in from a yard out to make it 35-7.
“Our effort was good, but I really don't know what Williamsburg has got. We'll know more after looking at the film,” Hilton said.
Though he was a little concerned over about five botched snaps, Hilton said he was pleased with how his quarterback played.
“He was a little nervous before the game, I forgot that this was the first panorama that he's started,”said Hilton. “He's still one of the best quarterbacks around in my opinion. He's been in a lot of big games.”
Knuckles led Bell with 72 yards on just three carries. Greer finished with 55 yards on seven carries. Starting tailback T.R. Christopher ran three times for 44 yards and caught two passes for 16 yards.
Zachery had 104 yards receiving on three catches and the touchdown.
Bell will be back in Middlesboro next Friday as they open their season against Whitley County in the City/County Bowl
