Thomasa Risner began the program at BCHS back in 1991 and says that it just grows and grows every year. Although no longer the Choir Director, the tradition is carried on with Jackie Thompson as the school's Choir Director. A large number of the school's students assume different responsibilities that culminate in this entertaining program.
This year's processional of veterans included the recognition of two men that had served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam: Retired Army Sergeant First Class, Randall Wright and Retired U.S. Marine Corps Major, C.B. Grey. Also recognized for his involvement in the very first Celebrate America was Army Sergeant First Class Dan Tuttle, who served in Afghanistan.
One highlight of the program was the presentation of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" (originally popularized by the Andrews Sisters in the 1950's, an iconic World War II tune) by the Women's Choir and the trio of Stephan Lasley, Keyla Caldwell and Elizabeth Marsee. To the large audience's surprise and enjoyment, Retired Air Force Master Sergeant Charles Siler and his wife of 50 years hit the gym floor to do the Jitter Bug.
Various speakers addressed issues such as the nature of the military, the history of the country, and the conflict the country is involved in today. But perhaps the most resonating thought came from a student as the program was coming to its end.
Travis Kinkade delivered the message that regardless of the fact that we are involved in a "politically controversial engagement, the service men and women deserve our support and prayers."
