PINEVILLE - Administrators, faculty, staff, students and other local citizens saluted the members of the Pineville Board of Education earlier this week.

Statewide more than 800 local school board members are being honored by the Kentucky School Boards Association along with their local communities during Kentucky's January observation of School Board Member Recognition Month.

Pineville Independent Board of Education members are Robert Roan, Carolyn Goodin, Ann Combs, Jeanette Cawood and James Gragg, Jr.

“We're proud to celebrate achievement in our schools, whether it comes in test results, college scholarships or success by our academic and athletic teams,” stated Superintendent Mike White. “We mark the contributions made by our teachers, bus drivers, office workers, administrators, parents and volunteers. But none of those success stories could be as meaningful as they are without the work done by our board members,” he added.

Board of education members, in Pineville schools, develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues - issues that impact the entire community. Members are responsible to the taxpayers to ensure the efficient use of the annual budget, to ensure equal learning opportunities for 650 students, and maintain a safe and productive work place for more than 100 employees.

Pineville Mayor Robert L. Madon signed a resolution proclaiming January as “School Board Member Recognition Month.”

The resolution, in part, reads: “Whereas, the mission of Kentucky's public school system and of the Pineville Independent Schools is to assure that all students achieve at high levels and possess the knowledge and skills to be responsible citizens and enjoy productive and satisfying lives; and Whereas, Kentucky's 874 locally elected school board members are the heart and soul of the public education governance system in our state, and in our community Robert Roan, Carolyn Goodin, Ann Combs, Jeanette Cawood and James Gragg represent the essence of the goals of local leadership; and Whereas, the district they lead serves more than 664,000 Kentucky students, including 650 of our community's children; and Whereas, our community's school board members play a crucial role in promoting student achievement by creating vision, establishing policies and budgets, and sitting clear standards of accountability for all involved; and Whereas, the members of the Pineville Independent Board of Education are directly accountable to the citizens in their districts, serving as a vital link between members of the community and their schools; and Whereas, the friends, neighbors and family members who serve on the Pineville school board provide a passionate voice of advocacy for public schools and the welfare of school children; and Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize these individuals as outstanding volunteers and champions for public education; Note, therefore, I, Bob Madon, Mayor of Pineville, do hereby proclaim January 2007 as ‘School Board Member Recognition Month' in Pineville and I urge all citizens to join me in this special observance”.

“Without effective leadership by this school board, the classroom achievement by students and teaches wouldn't and couldn't be the same,” said KSBA President Brenda Jackson, a member of the Shelby County Board of Education.
