NEW TAZEWELL, Tenn. — Cumberland Gap’s boys and girls tennis teams tuned up for the upcoming district tournaments with wins at Claiborne Wednesday afternoon.

The Panther boys swept through the singles matches with Robert Caldwell defeating Michael Jessie 6-1, Jared Asher pulling off a 6-2 win over Austin Neely, Jon Slaven downing Dylan Hoskins 6-0 and Darcy Tabotabo beating Tyler Bussell by that same score. Tyler Compton beat John Bull 6-1 and Brandon Head also was a 6-1 winner over Zach Givens.

In doubles’ play Claiborne’s Jessie and Neely salvaged the Bulldogs’ lone win in the longest match of the evening. They outlasted Caldwell and Asher 6-6 (8-7) in a tie-breaker.

Cumberland Gap’s Slaven and Tabotabo cruised to a 6-0 win over Hoskins and Bussell while Compton and Micah Wade teamed up for a 6-2 victory over Givens and Bull.

In girls’s play, the Lady Panthers reached the five wins needed for victory.

Senior Kayla Lewis was a 6-3 winner over Lindsey Jones at number one singles, Andrea Bisceglia pulled out a 6-4 win over Meghan Treece and Emily Daniels got past Brittany McLain 6-4.

The remaining singles matches went the Lady Bulldogs’ way as Sarah Bishop topped Brook Fuson 6-2, Amber Gridner beat Kelly Taylor 6-1 and Haley Bolden got past Morgan Billingsley 6-1.

In doubles it was Lewis and Bisceglia pulling off a 6-4 win over Jones and Treece while Daniels and Fuson got past McLain and Bishop 6-3.

That gave the Lady Panthers the five wins they needed for victory with Hannah Hatmaker and Kierstyn Carmical’s match against Gridner and Bolden still going.
