The girls team moved their record to 14-2 on the season.
Earlier during the day, the Cumberland Gap boys won the district 2 A-AA championship with a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Pigeon Forge Tigers. Hank Luetjens and Rodney Martinez (CG) aced the duo of Ben Cave and Jacob Cave (PF) by a final score of 9-7 to push the Panthers over the top. Coming into the final two doubles matches the Panthers trailed the Tigers 3-2 from singles play. The Panthers needed a sweep and Alec Lewis and Harley Evans (CG) did their part by overpowering Paul Harper and Aaron Johnson (PF) 8-0. Meanwhile Leutjens/Martinez had built a 5-2 lead over the once beaten brother duo of Pigeon Forge. The Tigers caught up at 7-7 before the Panthers sneaked to an 8-7 lead. Hank Luetjens finished off the victory with a powerful overhead and the Panthers rushed the court to celebrate their advance to the region next Thursday with an opponent to be determined. Other scores in singles were I. Cave (PF) over Luetjens (CG) 4-6 6-3 (10-6), Lewis (CG) manhandled Harper (PF) 6-3 6-0, B. Cave (PF) defeated Evans (CG) 7-6 (7-3) 6-0, Martinez (CG) aced Aaron Johnson (PF) 6-2 6-2, and Stephen Woodward (PF) beat Garrett Jones (CG) 7-6 (7-3) 6-0.
The Panthers advanced to the championship from the previous day with a 4-0 victory over Union County. Helping provide the sweep were singles winners Henk Luetjens, Alec Lewis, Harley Evans and Rodney Martinez. The Panthers advance to the next round with record of 14-2.
Both Panthers teams advance to region championships Thursday, May 10, at a site to be determined.
