Freshman Chatman Taylor struck out 14 batters, walked three and gave up just a single to Kacy Shelton over seven shutout innings.
“I’m feeling great about the way we’re playing,” coach Rheagan Redmond said. “Chatman’s been throwing really well in practice and we’re confident.”
While Pineville didn’t manage a hit in the game, they were opportunistic on the basepaths.
Victoria Gilley reached on an error leading off the third inning. She stole second and then back to back walks loaded the bases. Lindsay Roan (pictured above) slapped a grounder to second to bring Gilley home and the Lady Lions led 1-0.
Taylor walked in the sixth inning, moved up on a pair of ground outs by Roan and Knuckles and scored on a wild pitch.
Pineville tacked on another run in the sixth when Leslie Howard walked and then came all the way around to score when Blair Combs’ drive to right went for a two-base error.
Knox Central was able to get two runners on base in the second, fifth and sixth innings, but each time Taylor was able to get of the jam with a strike out.
“Knox Central has got a good team and a good pitcher. They beat us before so our girls were really hungry and eager to play today,” Redmond said. “I was glad to see them have a little bit of fire today and I hope that fire just carries us through to the district.”
The Lady Lions (6-3) are off until the weekend when they travel to Louisville for the Fairdale Annual Tournament. They’ll open up against Whitley County on Friday at 7 p.m.
“The tournament is going to be a good experience for our girls,” added Redmond. “Just to get away and see some different teams. We’re going to just have fun and come back ready for the last week of the season.”
Knox Central (8-10) hosts Oneida Baptist on Thursday.
