standardized patient program info session coming up

(Special to the Daily News)

HARROGATE, Tenn. — Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) will hold an information session for anyone interested in applying for LMU-DCOM’s Standardized Patient Program. The information session will be held on Monday, June 25, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. at the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum on the LMU campus in Harrogate.

A Standardized Patient is a person trained to portray an actual patient with a specific medical history and physical exam findings for the purpose of instructing medical students to examine, diagnose, and communicate effectively with patients.

Candidates for the Standardized Patient Program should have flexible schedules, an ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism, a desire to work in a state-of-the-art medical school facility, and an interest in medicine and medical education.

“Standardized patients find the experience to be meaningful, challenging, and enjoyable,” said Dr. Burt Routman, professor of family medicine at LMU-DCOM. “Interacting with new medical students and knowing the students will one day be treating ‘real’ patients is a satisfying way to contribute to their medical education.”

On August 1, 2007, members of the LMU-DCOM inaugural class will arrive on the LMU campus to begin their medical education. The Standardized Patient program is an integral part of the LMU-DCOM curriculum. Students will practice their clinical skills by interacting with Standardized Patients in a state-of-the art clinical skills suite within the LMU-DCOM facility.

The information session will include an overview of the LMU-DCOM Standardized Patient Program by school officials. Applications for the program will be available following the session. Standardized Patients are employed by the University and paid an hourly wage. Lincoln Memorial University is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
