Honored guests included James Curry, Commander of Post 11139 Veterans of Foreign Wars; Park Yeager, Quartermaster of VFW Post 11139; Todd Williams from the Sons of the American Revolution; Sgt. 1st Class Chris Jackson, Army National Guard Recruiting, Non Commissioned Officer in Charge; Sgt. Cody Ayers, Army National Guard recruiter; and BCHS Principal Jeff Saylor.
A slide presentation of the year’s accomplishments and Summer Leadership School training along with some of the more humorous “activities” of the cadets was presented. This entertainment was followed immediately by the presentation of cadet awards. The cadets had worked hard this year and many academic awards, and national level awards along with the Outstanding Cadet award were presented.
The following cadets maintained grade point average of 3.7 or better for this school year: Cadet SrA Kim Honeycutt, Cadet Col. Ashley Mills, and Cadet SrA Meagan O’Connor. Cadet Cadet SrA James Tigue maintained a 3.8 GPA; and Cadet Lt. Col. Kayla Saylor and Cadet 1Lt. Jessica Smith had GPAs over a 3.9. Cadet SSgt Anna Tanner maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year.
The highest-level local award presented to cadets is the Outstanding Cadet Ribbon. This ribbon is presented to one cadet in each of the four Aerospace Science (AS) levels. They must be of high moral character, demonstrate positive personal attributes, display outstanding military leadership, and attain academic and military excellence. The winners were: for AS I Cadet SSgt Anna Tanner; AS II Cadet 1Lt. Jessica Smith; AS III Cadet Maj Heather Partin, and AS IV Cadet Col. Ashley Mills.
The National and State awards were as follows:
The Kentucky Army National Guard Junior ROTC Distinguished Cadet Medal was presented by Sgt. Ayers to Cadet 2Lt. Josh Ingram, a junior and the corps Finance Officer.
The Army JROTC Medal was presented by Sgt. Ayers to Cadet Maj Sam Lee, a third year cadet and flight commander of Alpha Flight.
The Kentucky Air National Guard Most Improved Cadet Award was presented to Cadet SrA P.J. Taylor, a second year cadet.
The Air Force Award for Math and Science was presented by SFC Chris Jackson to Cadet SSgt Anna Tanner, a freshman and is the Flight Sgt. for Bravo Flight. She is also a member Bell County’s Tennis Team and the Lady Cats Volleyball Team.
The Tuskegee Airman Award was presented to four cadets: Cadet SrA Julian Gelner, Cadet SrA Thomas Bingham, Cadet A1C Quinton Fletcher and Cadet A1C Megan Martin. SFC Jackson presented these awards.
The Air Force Sergeants Association Award was presented to Cadet SSgt Jacob Sherrill, a first year cadet and an element leader in Delta Flight.
The Military Order of the Purple Heart was presented by James Curry, a life time member of the order, to Cadet 1Lt. David Honeycutt, a third year cadet and commander of Echo flight.
The Sons of the American Revolution Award was presented by Todd Williams to Cadet SSgt Logan Campbell, a first year cadet and flight sergeant for Charlie Flight.
The National Sojourners Award was presented to Cadet SSgt Scott Lee, a first year cadet assigned to Delta Flight and a member of the Kitty Hawk Air Society.
The National Sojourners Award was presented to Cadet SMSgt Traci Tolliver, a second year cadet and the Historian for the corps.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars award was presented by Park Yeager. There were three recipients: Cadet SrA Jonathan Brown, a first year cadet and a member of Charlie flight; Cadet MSgt Jacob Hurst, a second year cadet and Flight Sergeant for Delta Flight; and Cadet Anna Tanner.
For the 13th consecutive year, the local Veterans of Foreign Wars generously provided a $500 college scholarship to one of the graduating cadets. This year the scholarship went to Cadet Lt. Col. Kayla Saylor, who plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University in the fall.
The Military Officers Association of America award was presented to Cadet Maj Meggan Rose, a fourth year cadet and Deputy Commander for the Corps.
The Military Order of World Wars Medal was presented by SFC Jackson to Cadet Col. Ashley Mills, a fourth year cadet and corps commander. She is also a member of our drill team and the Kitty Hawk Honor Society.
Cadet 1Lt. Tamara Hoskins received the Reserve Officer Association award. A second year cadet, she is the commander of Bravo Flight.
American Veterans award was earned by Cadet Capt. Tonya Burnett, a second year cadet and the commander of Delta Flight. She is also a very active member of our Kitty Hawk Honor Society, drill team and color guard. Sgt. Ayers presented the award.
The Daughters of the American Revolution medal recipient was Cadet Lt. Col. Kayla Smith, a fourth year cadet and Operations Officer. She is also the commander of the Kitty Hawk Honor Society.
The American Legion presented two awards to cadets. The first was a Scholastic Award received by Cadet 1Lt. Jessica Smith, a second year cadet and flight commander for Charlie flight. She is also a member of the Kitty Hawk Honor Society. The second award, the American Legion Military Excellence Award, was presented to Cadet Major Jonathan Miracle, a third year cadet and the corps’ Personnel Officer. He is also a member of the Kitty Hawk Honor Society.
The highest cadet awards are the Distinguished Cadet Award and the Air Force Association Award. The recipient of both award was Cadet Maj. Heather Partin. A third year cadet, Partin is the Drill Team Commander. She had a part in almost every marching occasion this year, whether color guard or Exhibition Team. She also excelled last year at Summer Leadership School, and was also selected as the 2007-2008 Cadet Corps Commander for KY-931, Bell County High School AF JROTC.
Departing Corps Commander, Cadet Colonel Ashley Mills closed the ceremony with her farewell speech. The cadets and their guests then enjoyed a buffet and social.
