Two employees threatened during 2005 incident

PINEVILLE — A Middlesboro resident was sentenced this month to prison for theft and wanton indifference to two Wal-Mart employees who were being threatened by another person in July 2005.

On June 4, Bell County Circuit Judge James Bowling sentenced Tensie Christian Ledford, 27, of 426 Fairview Road, Middlesboro, to two five-year terms in prison and 12 months in the Bell County Jail, all to be served concurrently, after accepting Ledford’s March 29, 2006 guilty plea to two counts of complicity to commit wanton endangerment and one count of theft.

The charges all stem from a July 23, 2005 incident in which Ledford assisted Sylvia S. Miles in committing a theft at Wal-Mart of Middlesboro. During the theft, Ledford showed “extreme indifference to the value of human life by wantonly engaging in conduct which created a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury to two Wal-Mart workers, Holly Bailey and Shaun Davis.

Ledford was among 14 defendants sentenced recently by the court, including:

  • April Bailey Jones, 33, c/o Rockcastle County Jail, Mount Vernon, sentenced June 11 to seven five-year terms in prison, all concurrent, after pleading guilty June 4 to three counts of theft, two counts of identity theft and two counts of forgery.

The charges are in connection with a series of incidents occurring in 2005 and 2006. On June 21 of that year, Jones used identification belonging to Wilma Miller — without Miller’s consent — to obtain an American Express credit card which was then used to make charges in the amount of $7,005.75 during a period continuing until Jan. 16, 2006. On Sept. 29 of the same year, Jones again used Miller’s identification to obtain a Bank of America credit card, to which she charged $7,237.51 during a period continuing through Feb. 14, 2006. From Oct. 23, 2005 to Jan. 22, 2006, Jones used a Chase credit card to unlawfully charge $7,170.66.

In a separate case, Bailey also was sentenced to serve one year in prison, two terms of 12 months in jail, and 90 days in jail, all concurrent with each other but consecutive to the five-year sentences in the other case, after pleading guilty to possession of oxycodone, hydrocodone and alprazolam, all controlled substances, and give an officer a false name and address.

The second group of charges are in connection with Dec. 16 incidents in which Jones identified herself to Angel Sowders to Middlesboro Police Officer Joshua Burchett during official business.

Two counts of being a persistent felony offender were dismissed.
