BARBOURVILLE — The Middlesboro 11- and 12-year-old All-Stars shook off a slow start to blow past Pineville/Bell County 13-2 Friday evening in the opening game of the Area 3 tournament.

Dalton Elliott homered and doubled in two at bats to drive in four runs, Luke Boyd, Chris Short and Adam Holeman had two hits each and Dylan Baker pitched a two-hitter to lead the Middlesboro cause.

Seth Jeffrey singled with one out in the top of the first for P-B and Kyle Capps drew a walk. Both came around to score as Pineville/Bell took a quick 2-0 lead.

Middlesboro got on the board in their half of the first as Boyd singled to bring in Michael Wilson and make it a one-run game.

Baker sat Pineville/Bell down in order in the second and Middlesboro took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Holeman had an RBI single to score Lucas Crawford and Wilson circled the bases on an error to make the score 4-2.

The Middlesboro bats came alive in the third as Short hit a two-run double followed by Elliott’s home run. Holeman then tripled and scored as Wilson beat out on an infield hit and the lead grew to 9-2.

Baker pitched around walks to Cody Wombles, Luke Brooks and Cody Ferguson in the top of the fourth with three strikeouts and Middlesboro put the game away in the bottom of the inning.

Brian Hale just missed a home run as he doubled to the fence in left field to start the inning. Boyd’s ground out moved him over the third and Anthony “Boo” Maiden sent a high drive to deep right field that went for a three-base error. Baker reached on an error as Maiden scored to make it 11-2. Short singled and stole third then Elliott doubled to bring in two more runs and bring the ten-run rule into effect.

Baker finished with ten strikeouts in the game while allowing just two runs on two hits and five walks to pick up the win.

Middlesboro will play the winner of Friday’s late game between host Knox County and Williamsburg today at 5 p.m. While Pineville/Bell takes on the loser in an elimination game at 7 p.m.
