HAZARD — The Middlesboro 11- and 12-year-old All-Stars defeated Harlan 4-3 Saturday and South Laurel 12-7 Sunday to advance in the District 4 tournament at Hazard.
In Saturday's win, Michael Wilson struck out 12 over 5-2/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs on four hits to get the win.
D.J. Daniels got Harlan's Alex Sergent to fly out to left field for the final out to pick up a save.
Middlesboro went up 2-0 in the first inning as Chris Short and Dalton Elliott both singled and scored on Wilson's two-run double.
Harlan cut the lead to 2-1 in their half of the first, but Middlesboro got the run back in the second.
Luke Boyd singled and later scored on a double by Adam Holman to make it 3-1.
Middlesboro got a big insurance run in the fifth on singles by Daniels and Brian Hale.
Harlan made it 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth as John Lewis tripled and scored on a ground out. They got another run in the sixth as James Bond singled, went to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
Wilson reached the pitch limit and Daniels came on and walked Dawson Charles before getting the final out.
Lucas Crawford also had a hit for Middlesboro.
Details from Sunday's game were unavailable at press time, but Middlesboro slugged their way to the 12-7 win over South Laurel. They play North Laurel today at 6 p.m. as the tourney continues in Hazard.
