The Local Emergency Planning Commission watched a demonstration of the new emergency notification system recently installed in the E-911 center during the regular meeting on Thursday, July 26. The systems allows automatic telephone notification of a specific group or a geographical area in case of emergency.
David Breeding briefed the commission regarding establishment of a Disaster Animal Response Team. He said plans are to build a regional team including participants from Claiborne, Grainger, Union and Campbell Counties. DART would respond in case of widespread animal disease or disaster. The team will be composed of veterinarians, TEMA personnel, local EMA personnel, and volunteers.
The local Citizens Corps is developing. It includes neighborhood watch groups, volunteer emergency responders, the Citizens Emergency Response Team, and the rescue squad.
Breeding said the municipalities in Claiborne County have been making significant progress towards NIMS compliance since a month ago. He added that Claiborne County appears to be closer to compliance than most surrounding counties. He also told the commission that coordination efforts are in progress for agencies to work together in case of an emergency situation at the Claiborne County Fair.
The next LEPC meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30.
