Harrogate Garden Club members met Aug. 22 at the Cottage Gate Coffee and Tea Shop in Speedwell, Tenn. for their regular meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Sandie Stapleton. The devotion entitled our “Hot Water” experiences was given by Chaplin Anna Sue Watson.

A delicious luncheon, provided by the Cottage Gate Shop of strawberry salad, scones, sandwiches, and tea was enjoyed by the group.

In old Business, Stapleton reported that the City Garden had been weeded and new mulch added around the plantings. She thanked Sheriff David Ray for his help in getting the area looking better with the help of county inmates to do the weeding.

In July the club voted to sponsor a contest involving classes at Cumberland Gap High School and J. Frank White Academy to design landscaping around the new restrooms at Harrogate City Park. The schools have agreed to participate in the contest. The Club will ask area businesses to donate prize money, and guidelines will be given to those participating. The City of Harrogate will provide the plants that the winning team designs for the area.

In other business, The City of Harrogate requested a letter of support from the club for grant money to erect two more welcome signs to be put on Highway 63. The motion was made and seconded to write the letter. Also, the club’s fall yard sale will be held on Friday, Oct., 19, at Harrogate City Hall. The money raised will go for work done by the club in the City.

The program for the meeting was given by Jennie Beeler of the Cumberland Gap National Park Resource Management Division on bad insects invading the trees of our region.

Specimens brought for the meeting included sweet pea, zinnia, Russian sage, snap dragon, oregano, and yarrow. Each one received a blue ribbon.

Members present included Alice Robertson, Lisa Howard, Pat DeRosett, Sandie Stapleton, Judy Robertson, Gladys Thompson, Donna Rose, Martha Robertson, Anna Sue Watson, and Karen Brown. Also attending was guest Jennie Beeler.
