The New Tazewell Planning Commission met on Tuesday evening, Oct. 2, for a quick session.
After review and approval of the minutes from the previous meeting, they reviewed site plans for a minor expansion of the industrial facility at King Business systems. The proposed addition would add a mechanical room and expanded restroom facilities to the current building. All city planning requirements were included in the presentation and the city planner granted approval with minimal discussion.
Of more interest, Giles Industries provided city planners with a proposal to use a portion of their property for a modular home display center. The area proposed for this use is the land to the north of the Giles factory entrance and located between the railroad tacks and Hwy. 33. Giles is looking to use the area as a display for dealers and the displays will not be used for retail sales. The property is partly zoned for industrial use and partly zoned for commercial use.
Some concern was expressed about way the proposed facility would look to people coming into the city. Several commissioners voiced an opinion that Giles would probably want to make a good impression on dealers coming to see their products and the expectation was that the area would be well landscaped and attractive.
The individual homes would not be tied into the water and sewer system and would be periodically rotated to reflect the current year's production models.
Planners decided that no action by the Commission was required at this time since the planned use fell within the city's zoning ordinances.
