The Tazewell Board of Mayor and Aldermen considered a brief agenda during the regular meeting on Oct 9.

Dennis Shipley, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, presented Mayor Steve Vass with a certificate to certify the city as a Three-Star Community during the opening moments of the meeting.

A public hearing prior to the BMA meeting received no comments regarding Ordinance 235, the Responsible Vendor Act. The ordinance relating to alcohol retailers passed on second and final reading during the full board meeting.

Vass and Alderman Wayne Jessie reported on recent work completed at the city park that included paving and a shortcut across the walking trail for those who choose not to walk the full length. A brief discussion ensued regarding repairs to the city garage roof with no action taken until bids are opened at a later date. The board agreed to seek a contractor to re-stripe city streets that were recently paved.

Police Chief Jeff Buchanan reported 25 offences, 27 arrests, 74 highway citations, 57 other citations, 16 accidents and two domestic violence calls during the month of September. Tazewell/New Tazewell Fire Chief Barron Kennedy reported two responses inside city limits during September.

The board reappointed Vass as to the position of City Administrator and authorized issuance of a gas card for him. Diane Wilder received reappointment as the Chief Financial Officer.

The board agreed to modify the city's welcome signs to reflect the establishment rather than incorporation date of the city. Four minor wording changes to the municipal code received approval.

The next scheduled meeting of the BMA will be on Nov. 13.
