Panthers Win Big - Again; Move to 8-0

For the second consecutive week, the Cumberland Gap Panthers scored early and often to secure a lopsided victory, downing North Greene by a score of 54-20.

Brad Beason opened scoring for the Panthers with a 54-yard run for a touchdown in the first quarter. Matt Combs added the PAT and the Panthers led 7-0. When the Panthers got the ball back, quarterback Adma Nelson completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Combs who added the extra point to give the Panthers a 14-0 lead.

On the ensuing kick-off, Cody Miller returned the ball 91 yards for a North Greene score. The two point conversion attempt failed making the score CGHS 14, North Greene 6.

The Panthers answered with a kick-off return for a touchdown of their own when Beason brought the ball back 78 yards to paydirt. Combs added the PAT and the Panthers led 21-6. When the Panthers got the ball back, Whitt Willis was on the receiving end of a 56-yard touchdown pass from Nelson. Combs added the PAT and ended a flurry of scoring in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Jacob Shipley caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Nelson. The extra point attempt failed and the Panthers led 34-6.

Josh Barnett scored the next touchdown for the Panthers with a 52-yard reception from Nelson. Combs booted the extra point and the Panthers led swelled to 41-6 at the half.

Beason opened scoring for the Panthers in the second half as well with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Nelson. Combs added the extra point and the Panthers led 48-6. Later in the third quarter Ryan Shipley tossed a 38-yard touchdown pass to Adam Smith to close out scoring for the Panthers. The PAT kick attempt failed and the Panthers led 54-6.

North Greene managed to add a couple of cosmetic scores - a 16-yard touchdown run Josh Johnson (and two point conversion) in the third quarter and a Thurman Jones to Ryan Hopson 15-yard TD Pass in the fourth quarter to make the final score 54-20.

Cumberland Gap rolled up 510 yards of total offense while holding North Greene to 194 yards.

The unbeaten Panthers return to action on Friday, Oct. 26 when they visit Gatlinburg-Pittman (7-1, 4-0) with the Region 1-AA title on the line. Kick-off is 7:30 p.m.
