PINEVILLE — Colder weather has arrived. Bell-Whitley CAA is set to begin the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program or LIHEAP, on Monday and go through December 14. LIHEAP is a program to assist low-income families with high utility bills. LIHEAP is a statewide initiative sponsored by the Kentucky Association of Community Action Inc. in partnership with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

More than 2,011 Bell County resident received financial assistance and emergency services from the LIHEAP Subsidy component, last year. This year applications will be taken in alphabetical order with specific days assigned on the calendar. To apply, you must bring the following with you:

1. Most recent heating bill or verification that heating expenses are included in rent or lease agreements.

2. Social Security card or official documentation (medical card) with social security numbers for each member of the household.

3. Proof of all household income for the prior month.

There are two places, in Bell County, to apply and residents are encouraged to go to the nearest location to them. The hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Pineville at the Bell-Whitley CAA on 129 Pine Street. You may call 337-3044 for more information.

In Middlesboro the days are Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the National Guard Armory at North 19th Street.

The benefit amount that each household receives will be based on its level of poverty and the type of fuel used for heating. All eligible households will receive a benefit. Benefits will be made payable to the household’s primary or secondary heating fuel vendor.
