LOG MOUNTAIN — The Bell County Bobcats started what they hope is a run to a state championship with a 72-0 shellacking of McCreary Central Thursday night.

The Bobcats dominated in every phase of the game. They scored on every offensive possession as they rolled up 487 yards of total offense and held the Raiders to just 86 yards and four first downs.

Bell wasted little time in putting the game out of reach.

They took the opening kickoff and marched 58 yards on six plays. Freshman Dominic Carton capped it with a 14-yard run. Matt Simpson fielded a bad snap on the extra point try and took off around the right side for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0 with 10:04 left in the first quarter.

Monte Merrick’s kick-off went for a touchback and on McCreary’s first play from scrimmage Chirs Hale’s pass was intercepted by Chase Ely and returned to the 29 yard line.

Two plays later Spencer Greer broke through the line and rambled 20 yards to the end zone. Merrick’s kick made it 15-0.

The Bobcats forced a 3-and-out and marched right back down the field. Shawnta Zachery passed to Ely for a 21-yard touchdown to make it 22-0 with 6:36 still left in the first quarter.

Merrick added a 39-yard field goal with 2:22 in the period to stretch the Bobcats lead to 25-0 and the rout was on.

“That’s what we want this time of year. We don’t want a lot of hurrah, we just want to take care of business and that’s what we did,” said Bell County coach Dudley Hilton. “Our kids were very focused.

“You just can’t take a chance on these things. We felt like we were going to have an easy game tonight, but you know Kentucky thought they were going to have an easy game (Wednesday) night too. Things happen and you can’t take anything for granted.”

Zachery turned in a stellar performance subbing for the injured Kyle Nelson. He completed 8-of-9 passes for 118 and two touchdowns. His 30-yard strike to Matt Raines put Bell up 38-0 with 8:59 to go in the second quarter.

“Shawnta — the good Lord’s blessed him. He’s got a lot of talent and he showed it out here tonight. (The offense) didn’t skip a beat,” said Hilton. “Kyle’s still our quarterback, but it makes you feel good to know that if you got in a tough situation that you can bring him in and he can make things happen.”

Nelson is expected to be back for next week's game after being held out with a concussion.

Greer led the Bobcats on the ground with 144 yards on 12 carries. Bell used ten different ball carriers in the game as they totaled 369 yards on 39 rushes. Senior T.R. Christopher finished with 73 yards on six carries, Justin Goodin ran for 47 yards and a touchdown and Carton added 45 yards and two touchdowns on carries to lead the way. Simpson and Josh Brown also had one-yard TD runs in the second half.

With Zachery moving behind center, Chase Ely led Bell with two catches for 33 yards. John Dudley Hilton had two catches for 22 yards and also ran twice for 24 yards. Christopher also had two catches for 21 yards.

Cody Davenport returned an interception 51 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter. Zachery also had an interception and Ely had two.

McCreary’s only highlights were a fake punt that resulted in a 23-yard completion from Hale to Zach Roark for their longest play of the game and Justin Smith’s block of Merrick’s 60-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the first half.

The Bobcats led it 52-0 at halftime and the clock ran continuously in the third and fourth quarters.

“I got a lot out of a lot of kids tonight, I was very proud of all of them,” Hilton said.

The loss ends the season for McCreary Central with a 3-8 record.

Bell (11-0) advances to host the District 7 championship game next Friday night. They’ll get the winner of tonight’s Rockcastle at Knox Central match-up.

“We’ll have a very tough game. Knox or Rock either one will be fired up to come back here,” said Hilton. “We’ve already whooped them once but you can throw that out the door, it’s the second season now and everyone’s got new life.

“I doesn’t matter who we play, we know we’re going to be here now. That’s why we played on Thursday — it gives us a chance to go watch them.”
