Turnovers in their half-court offense hurt the Lady Jackets in the first quarter and the Lady Redhounds took advantage as went on to out-score Middlesboro 19-3 in the period.
Coach Elgie Green said the Lady Jackets are learning a new offense and that led to some of the turnovers. Middlesboro was also playing without three probable starters.
Senior center Brooklynn Jimison missed the scrimmage with a kidney infection and Shaleesha and Samantha Coleman have yet to be cleared to play after moving back to Middlesboro from Louisville.
The Lady Jackets went with a starting lineup of guards Sophie Robinson, Mallory Shoffner and Shanice Gilbert with Katie Maiden at forward and Ashley Williams at center.
“Our guards did a good job handling the basketball. Corbin’s got big strong kids and they put bodies on us,” Green said. “We just need to be more patient offensively and realize that if we don’t get our fast break we don’t have to score on the first or second pass.”
Middlesboro settled down to start the second quarter. Robinson scored seven of her eleven points in the period and the Lady Jackets led most of the way.
But Corbin got 3-pointers from Mikkah Rogers and Lyndsay Champlin in the final minute to take period two 14-11.
The third period went much the same was as the second as Middlesboro jumped out to a big early lead.
Williams scored nine of her team-high 15 points in the third quarter.
“She was getting the ball in the paint in the first half but not doing anything with it,” Green said. “We talked about it and in the second half she finally started squaring to the basket and scoring.”
Another three from Champlin just before the buzzer capped a late Corbin rally as they took the third period 19-17.
With both teams substituting heavily in the fourth period, Corbin outscored Middlesboro 18-7.
Though they were outscored by a total of 70-38, Green wasn’t displeased the the Lady Jackets effort.
“(Monday) was actually the first day we had all of our players in practice together,” said Green. “The things we need to correct are correctable, we just need to look at the film and get back to work.
“With learning a new offense and some players in different positions, it’s going to take a little while. But I think in another two or three weeks we’ll have everybody on the same page and you’ll see a pretty high-powered offense.”
He said the Coleman sisters will learn later this week if they will be eligible to play again early in the season.
“It’s not a done deal yet, we’ll find out Thursday,” he said. “But with those two girls back — and I think they will be — they’re just so quick and it allows us do so much more defensively.
“We’ve got three kids that didn’t play tonight that are possibly starters. If everything falls into place we’re going to be fun to watch.”
Shoffner had six points for the Lady Jackets, while Kristen Davis added three, Carissa Overbay two and Taylor Hatchell one.
Corbin was led by Rogers’ 22 points, while Champlin had 13 and Kelci Jones 10.
The Lady Jackets have another scrimmage Saturday at Louisville Fairdale against Fern Creek.
They open the season Monday, Nov. 26 at home aginst South Laurel.
