The Middlesboro Yellow Jackets continued their strong start to the season, pulling away for a 73-57 win over Barbourville Tuesday.
With the Tigers sticking to a 2-3 zone the entire game, Middlesboro did an excellent job of moving the ball and hit 11-of-21 three-pointers. Senior guard Daniel Griffin — who seems to play his best against Barbourville — was the main beneficiary as he scored a game-high 22 points.
Griffin also led the team with six assists and pulled down six rebounds.
A 3-pointer from Cody Messer brought Barbourville within one point at 17-16 early in the second quarter, but the Jackets pulled away from there to open up a 30-19 lead by halftime.
Blaine Green (16 points), Antwan Brown (14) and Nick Smith (14) joined Griffin in double figures as Middlesboro never trailed in the game.
Barbourville was led by Cody Thompson’s 14 points, while Messer finished with 13 and Garrett Clark 12.
Middlesboro (2-1) host district favorite Cumberland Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while Barbourville (2-2) will host Whitley County Friday.
