MIDDLESBORO — Local musicians came out to spread a little Christmas cheer at the Middlesboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility Tuesday evening for the Annual Christmas Musical Extravaganza.

There were several performers providing a little something for everyone. Linda Smiddy, a harp soloist, greeted guests with beautiful Christmas melodies as they entered the building and the Bell County High School Choir could be heard singing songs such as Carol of the Bells throughout the halls. Toward the back of the building Southern Skye, a talented bluegrass band, provided the perfect background music for snacks provided in the northwest dayroom.

Many family and friends came to enjoy the event.

“The idea is for residents and family to enjoy the music,” stated Alice Maddox the facility director. “This musical extravaganza has been going on for at least fourteen years now, and it is a great community outreach that brings the community into the facility.”

The event was open to everyone in the community and “it gives patients, who have come to the facility do rehab and are now back home, a chance to come back and visit with friends,” stated activity director Christy Bean.

The halls were filled with family, friends, and residents making the rounds to see each performance, and stop for a bite to eat. Just around each corner was a day room filled with different Christmas goodies, and in the dining room there was an entire Christmas meal. Residents could enjoy their meal while listening to the musical talents of three different performers, Nicole Mike and Josh Peters playing the piano and Keyla Caldwell singing.

The music could even be heard in the residents’ rooms, so if they wanted to visit with family in their own room they could still enjoy the performances.

Verna Sanders, a resident of the facility, stated, as she handed out programs to guests, “I think the music is gorgeous, and if it is as good as last year it will be fine.”

The atmosphere was filled with Christmas joy as residents and family enjoyed the musical extravaganza.
