Diane Roberts, Relay Chairwoman, says the first meeting to start planning this year’s Relay will be Tuesday, January 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the Lee County Courthouse.
“We would like to encourage anyone interested in helping with the planning of the Relay to attend this meeting,” stated Roberts.
This will be the fourth annual Relay For Life in Lee County, which was started in 2005 by Vickie Stallard who lost her husband to cancer, after she had attended another Relay For Life. With encouragement Stallard began Relay For Life, in Lee County, and served as chairwoman for the first two years of the event.
Cancer involves every family, in one way or another, Whether it is in the family or a friend, the disease affects everyone, some way. Roberts stated she became involved in Relay For Life when she lost her mother to cancer in 1988.
The Lee County Relay has been very successful in the past three years. There were 23 teams with 460 people last year. There, 132 survivors were honored and teams were able to raise $61,000.
While the Relay For Life culminates with an all-night event, there will be teams throughout the next eight months, raising funds for the event in several ways.
“You can raise money any way your imagination takes you. We’ve had raffles, bake sales, car washes and bluegrass concerts,” said Roberts.
Following the January 8 meeting, there will be a teams captain’s meeting Thursday, January 17 at 6 p.m. at the Municipal Building in Pennington Gap.
“We would like to invite all team captains back and anyone who thinks they may be interested in being a team captain this year to come to the kickoff meeting. It will be very informative,” Roberts explained.
