The Pineville Mountain Lions ran their record to 13-2 and improved to 2-0 in district play with a 66-48 win over Barbourville Tuesday night.
Dustin Day scored 10 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter and Dustin Warren hit three 3-pointers as the Lions stormed to a 21-14 lead.
In the second period Barbourville’s zone slowed the Lion offense and held them to just seven points.
Cody Messer scored eight of his 11 points in the second period as the Tigers rallied to take a 29-28 lead into the half.
Pineville took control of the game in the third quarter. Warren hit two more 3s (he finished with 18 points in the game) and James David Strange scored nine of his 15 points in the period. Day added six points on three inside baskets as the Lions out-scored Barbourville 23-11 to take a 51-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
Cody Thompson scored six of his team-high 14 points in the third to keep the Tigers within striking distance, but this was the Lions’ night.
Strange and Will Lambdin sank 3-pointers, Jon Widener scored four points, and Warren went 3-for-4 from the foul line as Pineville pulled away for the 66-48 win.
Pineville returns to action next Tuesday at Bell County. Barbourville (7-8, 0-2) hosts Lynn Camp Friday.
