MIDDLESBORO - A Middlesboro mason has been selected to compete in the Fastest Trowel on the Block Competition, hosted by the Mason Contractor’s Association of America.

Jack Slover, 37, is one of 16 journeyman masons chosen from across America to be in the competition. He will be accompanied by tender Jon Miracle, of Ferndale. This is the first Fastest Trowel competition that Slover has been involved in. He says contestants have to be invited to attend the competition. Slover has been doing masonry work for 15 years and is owner of J & L Masonry, of Middlesboro.

During the competition the goal is to complete as much of an 18 block long wall as possible, using 8” x 8” x 16” CMU and they will be provided mortar in a twenty-minute heat. Each contestant must have a high degree of workmanship using normal masonry practices and hand tools.

The purpose of the contest is to promote quality training and pride in workmanship among journeymen and contractors, as well as promoting the craftsmanship, speed and versatility of masonry systems and the masonry workforce. The contest rewards and highlights America’s best mason journeymen for their hard work and dedication to the trade. The first place winner will receive $15,000 in prize money. Last year the contest winner was able to lay 135 block in 25 minutes.

The contest is next Thursday at the Las Vegas Convention Center during the Mason Contractors Association of America convention.
