Bell County jobless rate rises

FRANKFORT — Unemployment in Bell County rose in December, 2007.

In November the jobless rate was 7.2 percent. The December statistics show the unemployment rate at 7.8 percent, a rise of .6 percent, in Bell County.

Three counties in the Cumberland Valley Area District recorded the state’s highest jobless rates. Jackson County had the state’s top rate at 10.1 percent. Clay County had a 9 percent jobless rate and Harlan County recorded 8.9 percent unemployment.

The jobless rate for the remaining Cumberland Valley was Laurel at 5.2 percent; Rockcastle County at 5.8 percent; Whitley County had a 6 percent jobless rate and Knox County’s unemployment was 6.9 percent. The eight county district had a jobless rate in December, 2007, of 6.8 percent.

Fayette and Woodford counties recorded the state’s lowest unemployment rates at 3.7 percent each. Warren County was recorded at 3.8 percent followed by Jessamine County, 4.2 percent; Bourbon, Madison and Scott counties had 4.3 percent. Franklin County saw 4.4 percent jobless rate while Boone and Daviess counties recorded 4.5 percent each.

Statewide unemployment rose in 74 Kentucky counties between December 2006 and December 2007, fell in 33 counties and remained the same in 13 counties.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually count people working.
