Tri-state area residents woke up to a winter wonderland Wednesday morning with snow blanketing the mountains from a winter storm that dumped snow across eastern Kentucky and parts of Tennessee and Virginia.

The weather caused many school closings in Southeast Kentucky and across the Tri-State area due to slick roads.

Taking advantage of a snow day at home, many local children pulled on their cold weather clothing to play in the winter fluff. Several others decided to capture the scenic views around the area and their homes with their cameras, while others braved the cold and slick roads to make it to work.

The National Weather Service’s snow warning for areas around Harlan and Whitesburg in far southeastern Kentucky expired Thursday at 1 a.m. EST. A wider warning for several counties in eastern Kentucky lasted through Wednesday night.

Forecasters say the wider area received about two inches of snow Tuesday night and up to another two inches was expected Wednesday, creating slick roadways throughout the region.

The picture of snow falling in the pasture was taken by Arthur Mason; the one of Joe Miracle and his son’s Brandon, Caleb, and Nate and the snowman they built on their snow day home from school was taken by Alison Miracle; and the photo of the snow capped mountains was taken by Ray Welch.
