Lions rally past Cawood in opener

HARLAN — The Pineville Mountain Lions rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Cawood 10-6 on Tuesday, scoring four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and adding three insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Jon Widener had a double and two singles to lead Pineville. Billy Rye contributed three singles. Jared Jeffrey and Shawn Madon each singled twice.

Anthony McMillian paced Cawood with a double and two singles. Greg York singled twice. Cory Sergent, Chase Niday, Blake Turner and Phillip Maggard each had one single.

Dalton Simpson earned the win for the Lions, giving up six runs in five-plus innings. Shawn Madon recorded the save with two shutout innings of relief.

Sophomore right-hander Chase Niday suffered the loss as he gave up seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. Blake Turner allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Cawood (0-1) returns to action Thursday at Evarts. Pineville (1-0) travels to Jackson County Thursday.
