The American Cancer Society’s signature activity - Relay For Life - is held in communities all across the United States and around the world. The purpose of Relay For Life is to raise funds to support the mission of the American Cancer Society to eliminate cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. The theme for 2008 is “Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.” We celebrate those who have survived cancer, we remember those loved ones lost to the disease, and we fight back to defeat cancer.

Relay For Life is an overnight community event in which Relay teams have at least one member taking turns walking the track during the Relay. For those not walking there is enough action to keep everyone busy. From entertainment, food and games to touching ceremonies and stories of inspiration, there is something for everyone at Relay For Life.

We have an opportunity to join the fight against cancer in Lee County and it is not too late to get involved. Plans are underway for the 4th Annual Relay For Life of Lee County scheduled for July 25. Volunteers are needed to be team captains and form new teams. Teams can be made up of friends and family, neighbors, coworkers, students or fellow church members; they can represent businesses, civic groups, schools and places of worship, etc. There will be a Relay team captains meeting at the Jonesville First Baptist Church, Thursday, April 3 at 6 PM. Anyone interested in learning more about forming a Relay team is invited to attend. Last year 23 teams took part and the goal for 2008 has been raised to have at least 28 teams participate. All teams from prior Relays are encouraged to return and new teams are welcome.

According to information gathered through the Regional American Cancer Society office Lee County had an estimated 120-130 new cases of cancer diagnosed in 2007. The Relay meeting is a great place to learn how to be part of this community’s fight against cancer.
