PINEVILLE -- Selected high school students in Bell County are chosen each year to take part in Leadership Bell County.

There were four high school seniors this year, one from Bell County High School, one from Pineville High School, and two from Middlesboro High School. Participating from Pineville High School was Shaina Theis. The group consisted of 14 adults and students.

Monday night Theis told the school board about her experience with Leadership Bell County, which is in partnership with Southeast Community College, Bell-Whitley CAA and the Bell County Chamber of Commerce.

The training event started last September at Pine Mountain State Resort Park, in Pineville.

“We had a meeting to choose a project, by the end of the year and get to know each other. Through April we had day-long meetings. The subjects varied among education, industry, economics and politics,” Theis explained.

The group went to Frankfort to learn about the state legislature. They shadowed elementary and high students and toured the hospital during Healthcare Day.

“We are going to do baskets for new mothers. We are going to put bracelets in the baskets along with CD’s with music for the babies to listen too. Studies show babies learn more when they listen to music,” Theis told the school board.

Leadership Bell County is held each year.
