There will be swimming lessons for students who want to learn to swim. All the coaches will be teaching students in camps throughout the summer. Basketball camps will be available. There will be an academic camp along with cheerleading camps, football camps and tennis camps along with camps at Pine Mountain and 4-H camps. There will also be a summer food program where both breakfast and lunch will be served in the school cafeteria. Summer daycare will be available as well. The Pineville Library also will be offering summer reading classes to the students.
Pineville Independent Schools ended their school year with 28 more students than they started out with last fall. The elementary school, for the last month, had an average attendance of 96.65 percent and the high school recorded a 93.11 percent attendance. The district total was 94.88 percent.
In a county-wide attendance contest between the three high schools, Pineville had 204 students in the contest and ended with 34 students meeting the qualifications to have perfect attendance or no more than two excused absences during the school year. A student from Middlesboro High School won first prize, a new car. There were also prizes for some of the other contestants.
The school board approved the Fiscal Year 2008-2009 budget. There were no personnel cuts and the budget includes a one percent pay increase for all personnel. The budget is $6,500 over last year. The board approved the creation of two new positions, a pathologist and someone to fill the position that Bill Keys left when he became elementary school principal last year.
The school board approved the 2008-2009 Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Contract and the health department agreement where a nurse and an assistant is at the school.
Jeanette Cawood receive the Kentucky School Board Association award, a Level 1 Certification as a school board member. The award was for receiving more than the basic training need to be a school board member.
Approval of the AmeriCorps and UNITE contract was approved. Students in the elementary school are taught about drugs and alcohol and the problems associated with their use.
The board was told that the teachers will have an appreciation breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on May 27 at Pine Mountain State Resort Park.
In other business, Tony Jackson was hired as a substitute teacher.
