HARROGATE, Tenn. — The city of Harrogate Board of Mayor and Alderman met for a special called meeting on Monday to discuss the purchase of a new tanker truck for the Harrogate Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD).

Fire Chief Stephen Roberts approached the Board saying the HVFD was in desperate need of a tanker truck, which is the vehicle that holds and transports water. The truck the department had currently been using was recently inspected and deemed unsafe for both the driver and any persons involved with the vehicle.

Roberts brought a representative from Heritage Fire Equipment, Inc., to speak to the board about the current vehicle and explain why it was unsafe. Roberts and the representative informed the board that the current truck had several mechanical problems and that they would be very costly to fix. They also felt the current tanker truck was too large to effectively service some of the locations in their coverage area. Their suggestion was to just purchase either a new or used vehicle.

The discussion continued and Roberts notified the board that as of right now the HVFD did not have a truck to transport water. Roberts added that he had done some research and found a nearby department that would be willing to rent them a truck while decisions were being made about purchasing one. He asked that the board approve renting a truck until one was purchased. The board approved that then continued discussion about the problems with the current truck.

The discussion then turned to whether or not it would be best to purchase a used truck or a new one. The board asked several questions as to which would suit Harrogate best but came to no conclusion. They then asked Roberts to do some extra research and to price some vehicles. Roberts said he would gladly do so and that he would bring his results to the regular board meeting scheduled for June 16, 2008.

The board decided to discuss the matter further when they had more information and the meeting was then adjourned.
