PENNINGTON GAP, Va. -- The Lee County Sheriff’s Department received a call for help from the home of Carolyn Pennington on Oakwood Avenue in Pennington Gap on Friday, June 13. She told officers that her son, David D. Scott, was threatening to do himself bodily harm.

When officers arrived Pennington gave officers permission to search inside her home. Captain Mike Reynolds began searching the home and in the process moved an air mattress to look inside a closet and hit a light fixture, on the ceiling. A pill container fell from the fixture.

Inside the container Reynolds found seven 80 mg OxyContin along with several pill fragments. As the search continued, two long rifles were found inside the home along with a 32 inch television that was still in the box. Also recovered at the residence was $4,641 in cash.

Michael A. Hawk, 21, of Kingsport, Tenn., a grandson to Pennington, admitted the pills as well as the money belonged to him. He told officers he had taken the television in exchange for pills.

Reynolds charged Hawk with possession with intent to sell, and being in possession of firearms while in possession of Schedule I or Schedule II drugs. Hawk was taken to the Duffield Regional Jail where he is being held without bond.
