The Wilderness Road Music Festival returns for its third year on Saturday, June 21, with opening ceremonies beginning at 2 p.m.. Once again, the Festival will be held on the front lawn of the Karlan Mansion located in the Wilderness Road State Park on Highway 58 in Ewing, Va. Hosted by the June Bugs Relay For Life Team, the Festival will feature country and pop music as well as traditional bluegrass and gospel music headlined by the award winning band “Shadow Ridge” fronted by native Lee Countian C.F. Bailey.
The schedule for entertainment includes performances by last year’s “Relay Idol” winner Morgan Wheeler from 2:05-2:30 p.m.; Town Branch Bluegrass Band 2:30-3 p.m., a cake walk featuring homemade cakes from 3-3:30 p.m.; Kelley Nelson from 3:30-4 p.m.; an auction from 4-5 p.m., and to close out the evening Shadow Ridge will take the stage from 5-6 p.m. It is suggested you come hungry and stay all afternoon because there will be lots of good food and fun for everyone.
Suggested donations of $5 for anyone over the age of 12 and $1 for children ages 6-12 will be accepted at the gate.
In the event of rain, the Wilderness Road Music Festival will be held on the same date and time in the Elydale School across Highway 58 from the Karlan Mansion.
The second musical offering to benefit Relay For Life will be the initial round of the “Relay Idol” competition scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 12 at the Lee High School Auditorium in Ben Hur, Va. “Relay Idol” premiered last year and was so well received that the Relay For Life Planning Committee chose to sponsor the fund raiser again for 2008. The competition will immediately follow the Cancer Survivors Dinner scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. the same day in the LHS Commons.
“Idol” hopefuls will perform in this round from which five finalists will be chosen by cancer survivors. These top five finalists will move on to perform at the 2008 Relay For Life on July 25 where the winner will be chosen. The winner will have the opportunity to record a professionally produced CD. Last year’s winner, Morgan Wheeler of Ewing, will make a guest appearance at the Relay For Life as well.
To be eligible to compete in “Relay Idol” participants must be at least 14 years of age by July 1, 2008. All contestants are required to submit a completed registration form and a non-refundable entry fee. Registration packets with detailed information are available at Food City, Save-A-Lot and IGA in Pennington as well as IGA in Jonesville and Rose Hill; and Woodforest Bank located in the Jonesville Wal-Mart. Early registrations must be postmarked by June 10; all registrations must be postmarked no later than June 30. The “Relay Idol” competition on July 12 will be open to the public and promises to offer an exciting evening of entertainment suitable for the whole family. An invitation is extended to everyone to come out to cheer on your favorite “Idol” contestant while supporting our community in the fight against cancer. Donations will be accepted at the door.
As mentioned above, a dinner to honor cancer survivors is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, in the Lee High School Commons prior to the “Relay Idol” competition. A fun-filled celebration of life with a great meal, door prizes and fellowship is on tap for those attending.
