PENNINGTON GAP, Va. — The American Cancer Society will present the Lee County Relay For Life on Saturday, July 25. The event will take place, starting at 4 p.m. at Leeman Field Park at 605 Old Zion Road, in Pennington Gap.

At present, there are 514 participants that have signed up. The top teams so far are: Flatwoods Elementary; SES TOMCATS; Hornets of Hope; Regional Cancer Network/LRMC; Lee Bank; Frankie Rhoten; Susie Campbell; Terry Anderson; Dotty Matlock; Mary Laster and Wal-Mart.

Now is the time to sign up for the Relay For Life of Lee County and become a part of the fight against cancer.

Relay for Life is a true measure of the difference that one person can make. Relay For Life was started by one person in Tacoma, Washington over 20 years ago.

In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon wanted to improve the income of his local American Cancer Society. He was used to running marathons and picked a day to run for 24-hours. He ran or walked with friends that paid $25 each to participate for 30 minutes. He raised $25,000 to fight cancer.

In May 1986 there were 19 teams that ran and raised $33,000 and that action has spread across the United States as a way to raise funds for cancer. This event has become known as Relay For Life and you can become part of this historic event, today.

This is the day to remember those who lost their fight with cancer and to celebrate with those who have overcome or are in the midst of their battle with cancer.

To become involved all you do is register to join the 2008 Kick-off celebration. It is as easy as sending an e-mail to lisa.debusk@cancer.org or call at (276)429-2255.
